Proposed Organ for Central Moravian Church - Bethlehem, PA

1803

Central Moravian Church in Bethlehem began to discuss plans as early as 1788 for a new organ which was to replace the 1759 Klemm/Tannenberg organ. It was not until July 25, 1803, however, that the church finally signed a contract with Tannenberg. The organ was to have had a detached and reversed console and two couplers. It was to have cost between £700 and £800. Tannenberg intended to begin work on the organ as soon as the installation of the organ for Christ Lutheran Church in York was complete. However, he died on May 19, 1804 before he could even finish the installation in York. Central Moravian Church eventually bought an organ from John Geib in 1806.

The following stoplist is what Tannenberg first proposed to the church:

Haupt Manual:
Principal 8 Fuß
Gross Gedackt 8 Fuß
Viola di Gamba 8 Fuß
Principal Octav 4 Fuß
Flaute 4 Fuß
Quinte 3 Fuß
Octav 2 Fuß
Upper Manual:
Lieblich Gedackt 8 Fuß
Quinta Dehn 8 Fuß
Salicional 8 Fuß
Flauto Amabile 8 Fuß
Principal dulcis 4 Fuß
Rohr Flöte 4 Fuß
Pedal:
Violon Bass
16 Fuß
Sub Bass
16 Fuß
Octav Bass

In this proposal, Tannenberg mentions that the 16' Violon Bass would be a better substitute for the 16' Posaunen Bass as it stays in tune much longer.

The stop list according to the 1803 contract signed by Tannenberg was:
